Walnut & Oak Bedroom Furniture

This personal project embodies 60's minimalism with bold colour-block furniture that creates a striking contrast with walnut and oak. The design features two tall cabinets, intended to sit next to each other. One cabinet includes a cupboard with three large shelves, three drawers, and an uplift cabinet above. The other cabinet houses a wardrobe with a large drawer below and an uplift cabinet above, offering ample storage space.

The design leverages asymmetry to generate visual interest while maintaining a balanced symmetry. Both cabinets are equally sized, with handles mirroring each other to form circles. The uplift cupboards mirror the bottom drawers. The handle design consists of oversized semi-circles, aligned to meet and form circles, exuding a 60's aesthetic. The recessed handles are precisely routed using a J-cutter directly into the plywood, to create a lip that exposes the beautiful layers of birch inside the handle.

Walnut-backed handles contrast with the oak cupboard doors, creating a central focal point for each cabinet.

This functional design is intuitive to use and features large handles, with soft-close BLUM hinges and runners ensuring smooth and easy operation. The placement of large drawers at the bottom minimizes the need for bending to reach the drawer handles.

The drawer boxes are constructed from 15mm birch plywood, featuring dovetail detailing at the front and back, and finished with a durable water-based lacquer.
